Learning to See- Focus Portsmouth

This blog is created to discuss photography, community and history as it may pertain to
the project with award winning photographer Nancy Grace Horton called, Learning to See- Focus-Portsmouth, NH, USA and the 8th graders at The Portsmouth Middle School.

Let our first discussion begin with history,
and the image I have chosen to start the discussion is:

Dorothea Lange's famous photograph, "Migrant Mother"CREDIT: Lange, Dorothea, photographer, "Destitute Pea Pickers in California. Mother of Seven Children. Age Thirty-Two. Nipomo, California." February, 1936. America from the Great Depression to World War II: Black-and-White Photographs from the FSA-OWI, 1935-1945, Library of Congress. http://www.americaslibrary.gov/aa/lange/aa_lange_power_2_e.html

and a quote from the photographer

“The good photograph is not the object, the consequences of the photograph are the objects. So that no one would say, ’how did you do it, where did you find it, ‘ but they would say that such things could be.”
– Dorothea Lange

I encourage talk of this photograph and posting other photojournalistic images taken in history and any other thought pertaining to the project.

I am pleased that Portsmouth Middle School 8th graders are being provided this significant opportunity to be part of "Leaning to See-Focus Portsmouth" project. Thanks to all who have contributed to making this hands-(and eyes)-on learning opportunity available to our students. Can't wait to see the final product! Becky Harvey, PMS parent
