The opportunity to caretake a home for our amigos a few years ago, now a prospering solar campground and goat farm, placed us in Mayto, Mexico. Never did we imagine the local people here would draw us back year after year.

The Herrara Family settled Mayto over 40 years ago. They traveled here before there was a proper road to follow and they found a place to settle. Near the ocean the village sits, and the family has created farming and store keeping with a tienda in the village and a guest house and restaurant by the ocean. Many generations of this family continue to work, live and go to school here. It is this family that makes Mayto special for us. And if you want to visit, El Rinconcito is the place. Marasela makes the best food, one of my favorite meals, chicken enchiladas and her home made flan for dessert. She and her husband Fernando are the best hosts ever!

There are many stories to tell here. I have worked with the children, having them make images of the village and I have photographed and interviewed the teenagers. This year I continued with architectural documentation and explored a place I have not spent a lot of time visiting, “The Turtle Camp”. Joe, as he is called in English, has always been a friendly face in Mayto, and his English is improving much faster than my Spanish. He lives and watches over the camp where they are growing fruit trees and raising other animals in addition the focus of rescuing turtles eggs. They have started a recycling effort in the village of Mayto to keep all the plastic waste off the streets.

I am a still photographer, so pardon my flaws in my first attempt to make a video. I have found a great interest in the added sound to a visual and look forward to playing with the medium in the future.

I have made this video to share with students learning the language of Spanish and with an interest in culture and geography. Is is part of my ongoing exploration and sharing of the area. This is a video journey to the camp, on a bus, down a road and out to the wide open Pacific Ocean where a small group a people make a difference in nature. Where all are welcomed.

Now, Joe talks fast. I prompted him with my translated questions, (thank you Marasela!), and wow, he did a great job to help you understand what goes on here. This time of year is not the busy time of year with turtles, but I hope you find the place interesting!

Mayto, Mexico 2011

This year my project in Mayto, Mexico features the Tortuga Camp. This is my fourth year working in Mayto. To date I have created photographs, books and blogs. In addition to my own photographs I have worked with elementary school students, giving them cameras to help tell the story of their town. This year I am working in video and still images.

Originally I imagined being able to have the high school students meet up with me to post to the blog. I quickly realized teenagers here are very busy. During the day they are helping their families in the home and with family businesses. They are also spending time doing their homework, then go to school at 3pm until 8pm.

The Tortuga Camp then became my focus. No ordinary camp. Many types of animals, plants and projects going on.

Over the past three years I have been working with students in Mayto Mexico.

We have used photography and writing to make documentaries and bios about their village on the west coast of Mexico.

Nancy Modern at the Portsmouth High School has worked with me to introduce the students in her language department to the students in Mexico, through book form, exhibition and images posted to flickr.

During my residency at the Portsmouth High School this year I introduced the students and the teachers to this Learning to See Blog where you can see the start of dialog. There is also a Facebook presence.

This project is a work in progress. It continues to grow and adapt. Technology and language have become an interracial part of the program.

Thank you to Terra Merry, Helaine Wemple, Tara Hebert, Susan MacNichol and Nancy Wheaton Modern at the Portsmouth HS who integrated this project into their curriculum.

Welcome to the Learning to See blog!
Spring 2010

Spanish students at the Portsmouth High School will begin reading and responding to the photos and biographies from students in Mayto, Mexico. Everyone is welcome to make posts to this blog and are encouraged to do so, in Spanish or English. With some assistance, we hope to get the kids in Mexico to a computer... that works... and has the Internet. This will give them a chance to see themselves "live" on-line and create an opportunity for them to make a further exchange and to practice English. Portsmouth High School students will then begin to create their own photographic portraits and biographies and post them to the blog.

The first group of images are of the elementary schools kids in Mexico. Portraits with something that is special to them and a short writing exercise to caption their photo.

The second group of images of the high school students in Mexico include answers to the following questons:
Birthday, favorite music, favorite food, what do you want to be when you grow up, and tell me something about yourself. The students in Portsmouth will answers these questions and further expand their biographies to discuss a specific holiday that they celebrate.

With your help the Learning to See Cultural Exchange Project will continue between Mayto, Mexico and New Hampshire.

The 2010 project will focus on the teenage girls in the area, having them visually tell a story about their lives and practice their English. New Hampshire teens in advanced Spanish courses will do the same and further exchange will take place via the web.

Thanks to the Sunprints, UC Berkeley, Learning to See in Mexico had the opportunity to expirement with basic photography without having a darkroom, we used the sun as our source of light with special blue paper.

During the past two weeks I have been teaching 5th grade students from Kennebunk and Kennebunkport, Maine at The Heartwood College of Art Artwood Bound Program. We are learning the basics of B&W photography, doing photograms in the darkroom, I also call them silhouette prints. They caught on quick, not only to the technique but they were very creative in their compositions and use of materials.

Zoe Paarlberg, shown here when she was 13, has been assisting in the Learning to See Projects in Mexico for the past two years. Her help has been instrumental in connecting with the kids of the village. She helps with all aspects of the projects, helping the kids to use their cameras and behind the scenes, editing photos, making posters and displays for the projects. PLEASE make comments, ask questions, and create dialog, in Spanish and in English about the images made of Mayto, a small village on the west coast of Mexico. The titles are vague to give an opportunity to ask questions, make observations and share what you may or may not know about the pictures. Learning to See New Hampshire Exhibit

Through the month of April, the Portsmouth Public Library is hosting the exhibition, Learning to See, Mayto, Mexico. Images made by local students from this remote village on the west coast of Mexico. The exhibit was first seen in Mexico and also a book of the images is available. Stay tuned for conversation, in Spanish and English among students and fellow travelers.

Learning to See, Mayto Mexico 2009

This year Learning to See, Mayto Mexico was sponsored in part by a Cultural Exchange Grant from the NH State Council on the Arts and donations from the University of California, Berkeley. The photo based projects incorporate language exchange and geography. The exhibition was held in Mayto on February 16th and will remain up for one month. It was held at the Herrara Tienda with students, family and friends from as far away as the Netherlands attending.

The exchange exhibit with be on display at the Portsmouth, NH Public Library for the month of April 2009, and I will be giving a talk on my community programs at the Griffin Museum of Photography on March 15, @3. I will begin posting students images soon, and hope to hear from students I have worked with who are interested in connecting with other students, to talk about photography and work on language, Spanish and English.

Capturing history and community these are some examples of book projects I have done most recently. The Portsmouth (NH,USA) photo book is a collection of my photographs depicting the city as a landmark of the region.

The book, Ghana, An American Portrait Revisited is a commemorative 50th Anniversary celebration of Independence. Retracing Paul Strands photo expedition in the 1960's, myself and five other American photographers embarked on a journey to capture the culture of this young African country for a book and a traveling exhibition. the project with award winning photographer Nancy Grace Horton called, Learning to See- Focus-Portsmouth, NH, USA and the 8th graders at The Portsmouth Middle School.
