I had the pleasure of being an artist mentor at Art Allstate at the Worcester Art Museum this spring. Check out the great progression of creativity, with limited resources and time. The students were great and hard working and I enjoyed every minute.

Language Exchange - anyone want to translate to English?
Portsmouth, NH USA high school students comment on photographs made by Mexican student photographers. Using their Spanish writing skills, students look forward to hearing back, in English or Spanish from Mayto, Mexico.

Thanks to the Sunprints, UC Berkeley, Learning to See in Mexico had the opportunity to expirement with basic photography without having a darkroom, we used the sun as our source of light with special blue paper.

During the past two weeks I have been teaching 5th grade students from Kennebunk and Kennebunkport, Maine at The Heartwood College of Art Artwood Bound Program. We are learning the basics of B&W photography, doing photograms in the darkroom, I also call them silhouette prints. They caught on quick, not only to the technique but they were very creative in their compositions and use of materials.

Una contribución al blog, a la persona que sacó la foto. Incluye tu escritura e información personal [cuántos años tienes, cómo es vivir aquí, etc.]

¡A compartir! Vamos a compartir lo que escribimos con otros estudiantes. Después de leer lo que han escrito otros, vamos a analizarlo y evaluarlo para una nota en el rubric dado.

Fechas límites- 3 fotos con las escrituras – el miércoles, 22 para compartir en clase. Escrita a computadora, doble-espacio.
Después de las vacaciones – el martes, 5 de mayo – Entrégueme a mí todo.
El viernes, 8 de mayo – contribución al blog en el laboratorio de computadoras.

Teenager helps Learning to See Project by participating and exchanging language

Zoe Paarlberg, shown here when she was 13, has been assisting in the Learning to See Projects in Mexico for the past two years. Her help has been instrumental in connecting with the kids of the village. She helps with all aspects of the projects, helping the kids to use their cameras and behind the scenes, editing photos, making posters and displays for the projects. Through this blog and through Facebook, Zoe hopes to be able to stay connected to her friends in Mayto and to continue learning Spanish. Post messages to her here, in Spanish and English!

Here is a link below to a flickr page. This page contains images made by Mayto, Mexico students who participated in a Learning to See program in January.
PLEASE make comments, ask questions, and create dialog, in Spanish and in English about the images made of Mayto, a small village on the west coast of Mexico. The titles are vague to give an opportunity to ask questions, make observations and share what you may or may not know about the pictures. It is an opportunity for Ms. Modern's Spanish students in Portsmouth, NH to use an image made in a Spanish speaking country to practice using their knowledge of language to share in an exchange with all interested parties, especially those in Mayto!

Learning to See New Hampshire Exhibit

Through the month of April, the Portsmouth Public Library is hosting the exhibition, Learning to See, Mayto, Mexico. Images made by local students from this remote village on the west coast of Mexico. The exhibit was first seen in Mexico and also a book of the images is available. Stay tuned for conversation, in Spanish and English among students and fellow travelers.

And, if you can't make the exhibit, you can purchase the book and at the same time make a small donation to the Learning to See programs!

Learning to See, Mayto Mexico 2009

This year Learning to See, Mayto Mexico was sponsored in part by a Cultural Exchange Grant from the NH State Council on the Arts and donations from the University of California, Berkeley. The photo based projects incorporate language exchange and geography. The exhibition was held in Mayto on February 16th and will remain up for one month. It was held at the Herrara Tienda with students, family and friends from as far away as the Netherlands attending.

The exchange exhibit with be on display at the Portsmouth, NH Public Library for the month of April 2009, and I will be giving a talk on my community programs at the Griffin Museum of Photography on March 15, @3. I will begin posting students images soon, and hope to hear from students I have worked with who are interested in connecting with other students, to talk about photography and work on language, Spanish and English.

Capturing history and community these are some examples of book projects I have done most recently. The Portsmouth (NH,USA) photo book is a collection of my photographs depicting the city as a landmark of the region.

The book, Ghana, An American Portrait Revisited is a commemorative 50th Anniversary celebration of Independence. Retracing Paul Strands photo expedition in the 1960's, myself and five other American photographers embarked on a journey to capture the culture of this young African country for a book and a traveling exhibition. This blog is created to discuss photography, community and history as it may pertain to
the project with award winning photographer Nancy Grace Horton called, Learning to See- Focus-Portsmouth, NH, USA and the 8th graders at The Portsmouth Middle School.

Let our first discussion begin with history,
and the image I have chosen to start the discussion is:
